With The Nun, Judith Wiersema departs from the material. By working with beeswax and letting the natural properties of the material remain as visible as possible, a form emerged that is deliberately simple and unembellished. According to Wiersema, it is precisely these clear, sober forms that make a powerful statement.
During the process of folding, she suddenly saw the head covering of a nun. That association became guiding for the further development of the lamp. The posture of the design, guided by the thought of a nun, became restrained. As a result, there is a downward curve/movement, as she sees the nun.
What is enjoyable is that the lamp now, without pressing it upon the viewer, has something recognisable. It makes one think of something. Sometimes only after I say that I am inspired by the silhouette of the nun do others see it as well. I love this subtlety and the ability to move or touch people.
